Course Description

The workshop offers a solid introduction into using MAXQDA2022 for both interested researchers and already active users. The software can be used for the analysis of a wide array of empirical data such as interviews, focus groups, journals, diaries, observation protocols, legal documents, public media content, image, audio, and video data. At the heart of the workshop lies the planning and conducting of an empirical research project with MAXQDA guided by qualitative methods such as Content Analysis and Grounded Theory.

On day one we will conduct a „one-document research project” based on four interactive exercises that establish a solid understanding of using the software from data exploration to retrieving results. On day two we will expand on this with further software and methods training based on the interests and needs of the workshop participants. Furthermore, in the afternoon of Day 1 individual project consultation of 15 to 30 minutes for small teams and individual researchers is offered. The appointments are scheduled during the first workshop.

Workshop Day 1: MAXQDA foundations, from data exploration to analysis

  • Data exploration with memos, segment comments, colour codes
  • Inductive and deductive category formation, coding of data and creating a code system
  • Integration of metadata and using document variables for Mixed Methods research
  • Data retrieval, case- and group comparison and basic data visualization

Consulting Sessions Day 1 (Appointment based):

  • Feedback for existing MAXQDA projects, code systems and project planning
  • Troubleshooting for methodological or software related challenges
  • Consultation for research teams

Workshop Day 2: Advanced Functions (4-5 of the following)

  • Analysis of Image Data
  • Analysis of Audio and Video Data
  • Basics of Mixed Methods Research
  • Quantitative Content Analysis with MAXDictio
  • Qualitative Analysis 2.0: Paraphrases and Summaries
  • Different Workflows with MAXQDA based on various methods (e.g. Content Analysis, Grounded Theory, Qualitative Hermeneutics, Discourse Analysis, Videography etc.)
  • Insights into a finished research project
  • Data Analysis as a team with or without MAXQDA Cloud
  • Further contents and the selection of content will be based on the demand and wishes communicated during the first workshop and consultation sessions

Qualification Goals

  • Qualification for competent planning and execution of research projects with MAXQDA
  • Fundamental knowledge about all essential software functions, including:
    • Using memos, comments, and colour codes
    • Creating, applying, and organizing Codes
    • Creating and using document variables for analysis
    • Basics of data retrieval, analysis, and visualization
  • Solid insights in the potential and limitations of the research software
  • Guidance and basic skills for further learning
  • Further skills and functions based on the advanced functions of Day 2 (stated in final certificate after the workshop)

Trainer

  • Andreas Müller is an experienced and certified MAXQDA Trainer, contractual researcher, and methods- and software consultant with a focus on Mixed Methods analysis.
  • He is teaching courses with a wide array of methods and software functions including qualitative and quantitative text analysis, video analysis and mixed methods research.
  • He is working with institutions, research teams and individual clients from various fields such as sociology, communication sciences, economics and market research, health and nursing research, educational sciences, psychology and more.
  • Languages: German, English
  • Software knowledge: MAXQDA, ATLAS.ti, NVivo
  • Preferred Methods: Content Analysis, Grounded Theory, Mixed Methods Research, Discourse Analysis

For reasons of respect and fairness towards all participants and the workshop leaders, participants who miss more than 10% of the workshop are considered not to be present. You will therefore not receive a certificate and you will not be able to use the workshop in question to unlock funds or acquire further qualifications.
