Funding Support

The Junior Scholar Office (WiN-UBT) offers financial support opportunities for all career levels and is the contact for the application process for awards from various organizations.

Funding opportunities for doctoral candidates

Campus-CardHide

For the use of the library, the IT service and money transactions (e.g. in the cafeteria), a user authorization, the UBT Campus Card, is required at the University of Bayreuth. Members of the University of Bayreuth Graduate School (UBGTS) can apply for the Campus-Card even without enrollment or employment at the University of Bayreuth. The duration is determined by the UBTGS and depends on the expected doctoral period. You will receive the card by application through the secretariat responsible for your supervisor.

Individual budgetHide

As a member of the University of Bayreuth Gradudate School you will receive an individual budget to support your doctoral studies and the development and expansion of your (inter-)national network.
For example, active participation in conferences, summer schools and ZHL seminars as well as research stays are funded.

The use of the individual budget is only possible after you have fulfilled the following three requirements in any order:

  • Participation in a kick-off seminar
  • Participation in a workshop marked with an *
  • Upload of your certificate to the e-learning course "Good Scientific Practice"

Individual budget - documents

  • Download business expense accounting (only available in German), you can find a translation in the intranet (only for guidance!). Please submit this form to UBTGS prior to your departure incl. your and your supervisor's signature. You recevie an e-mail with information on next steps afterwards.
  • Important: If you do not yet have a tax identification number (11-digit "Steuer-ID"), please contact us at least one month before your planned departure.

In addition to the individual budget, members can receive a publication bonus in recognition of their first publication in a leading peer-reviewed journal.

Funding for conferences/meetings from the UBTGS community share.Hide

Members of the University of Bayreuth Graduate School can apply for funding of self-organized scientific workshops or conferences. The planning of the event must be in the early stages and the application must be submitted by several members, preferably from different disciplines.
Applications can be submitted at any time.

Bridging FundHide

The Bridging Fund is intended to provide one-time interim financing for doctoral candidates. Due to tight legal requirements regarding temporary contracts, an individual case review is necessary. The final phase of a doctorate or the waiting period between thesis and disputation (oral examination) are usually not funded.

Included in the access is a plagiarism checking tool that checks for plagiarism from websites and ProQuest academic databases. Please note that this is not a fully comprehensive plagiarism checker.

Funding opportunities for young scholars with doctoral degrees

At the University of Bayreuth, young researchers with doctoral degrees include postdocs, heads of junior research groups, post-doctoral researchers and junior professors.
Postdocs conducting research at the University with a scholarship should strive for membership at the University according to §1 of the Grundordnung (only available in German) in order to benefit from the support measures. Please contact your faculty for this purpose.

NEW from 2024: Research Stay GrantHide

With the Research Stay Grant funding programme, the University of Bayreuth provides its early career researchers with funding for a short stay of one to three weeks at an (inter)national university or research institution.
The Research Stay Grant includes reimbursement of travel costs between the place of work (usually Bayreuth/Kulmbach) as well as accommodation costs at the place of travel, visa fees and a daily allowance if applicable. The costs will be reimbursed by WiN-UBT upon application up to a maximum of €3,500.
Please note: Pure conference trips are NOT funded.

The call for applications is open once a year from 1 October to 15 November.
Applications can be submitted for trips in the period from 1 January to 31 October of the following year.
Applications must be submitted via the WiN portal.

SPECIAL REGULATION 2024:
The first call for applications will be open from 1 February to 15 March.
Applications can be submitted for travels between 15 April and 31 October 2024.

Research Stay Grant:

The funding line WiN-UBT teach supports the participation in continuing education measures of the Zentrum für Hochschullehre (ZHL).
The costs for events of the ZHL are covered, individually or until one of the certificates of the ZHL is obtained. The costs of participation in ZHL events at other Bavarian universities are also covered (seminar fee only).

Awards for young scholars

AwardsHide

The Junior Scholar Office (WiN-UBT) is your point of contact for the application process for awarding prices for outstanding doctorates from various organizations. WiN-UBT prepares the submission, which is finally made by the university management. Please note that not every price is awarded annually. We send out the relevant information via our newsletter and announce this on our homepage under "News".

Prize of the City of Bayreuth

The Prize of the City of Bayreuth is awarded annually and is open to all disciplines. Three outstanding dissertations are awarded, each of which is endowed with 500€.

Culture Award Bavaria Bayernwerk AG

The Bayernwerk in partnership with the Bavarian State Ministry for Science and Art awards the best graduates of all state universities in Bavaria with the Bavarian Culture Prize, in addition to artists and cultural workers. This is aimed at the best doctoral thesis from our university and is endowed with 2,000€.

Bertha Benz Prize

The Daimler and Benz Foundation annually awards the Bertha Benz Prize to young female engineers who have created added value for society with the results of their dissertation and are nominated by their scientific institutions. The prize, which is endowed with 10,000 €, is awarded annually and honors - in reference to Bertha Benz - pioneering spirit, courage and visionary character. The deadline for applications for the prize is March 1 each year.

German Thesis Award of the Körber Foundation

Every year, the Körber Foundation awards the German Thesis Award to the best doctoral candidates in all disciplines. In addition to academic excellence, what counts most is the specific social significance of the research contributions: The young scientists are encouraged to highlight the social value of their own research achievements and to engage in a public debate about them.

GI Dissertation Award
Every year, the Gesellschaft für Informatik, together with the Swiss Informatics Society (SI) and the Austrian Computer Society (OCG), announces the GI Dissertation Award for outstanding dissertations in computer science. This includes not only work that represents an advance in computer science, but also work from applications of computer science in other disciplines and work that explores the interactions between computer science and society. Only dissertations for which the date of the oral examination falls within the period from January 1 to December 31 of the previous year are eligible. The prize is endowed with 5,000€.

Klaus Tschira Foundation

The Klaus Tschira Foundation announces the annual KlarText Prize for Science Communication. Applications are open to scholars who have received their doctorate in the previous two years. The prize is open to all scientists who have written a doctoral thesis in biology, chemistry, computer science, geosciences, mathematics, neuroscience or physics. Those who have completed a doctorate in a related field but can assign their work to one of the seven areas are also welcome to apply. The prize is endowed with 7,500€. The application period begins on December 1, 2021 and ends on February 28, 2022.

Augsburg Science Award for Intercultural Studies 2021

The University of Augsburg, the Forum Intercultural Living and Learning (FiLL e. V.) and the Peace City of Augsburg jointly award the Augsburg Science Prize for Intercultural Studies. The Augsburg Science Award for Intercultural Studies, which was first announced in 1997 on the initiative of the founder of FiLL e. V., the entrepreneur and later Augsburg Peace Prize winner Helmut Hartmann, honors outstanding achievements by young scholars whose research deals with the intercultural reality in Germany and the related issues and challenges. The competition is open to all academic disciplines and aims to reward interdisciplinary and innovative work. The award is intended to provide an incentive for thematically relevant research work and to promote intercultural issues in particular. The award is open to academic qualification papers that have been submitted to a German university no more than two years prior to the current application deadline.

Applications are to be submitted digitally by one of the supervising university teachers with a copy of the thesis (in pdf), a summary of the study (max. four pages) prepared by the applicant (regarding the criteria 1. motivation, 2. social relevance and fit to the thematic focus of the award, 3. method, 4. results), the two reviews of the supervisors (in copy) as well as a curriculum vitae to the responsible staff member of the University of Augsburg, Kristina Keil (kristina.keil@presse.uni-augsburg.de).

Application deadline is December 10, 2021.
