This workshop examines ways of improving written academic English in the Natural Sciences. The course participants will investigate the writing process, look at classic mistakes made in written academic English and then evaluate style and structure of papers in the Natural Sciences. We will take into consideration punctuation in English texts, academic vocabulary, learning from native speaker papers, writing abstracts and titles and getting a paper published.

We will also place emphasis on making academic texts succinct and easier to understand. Participants will be given the opportunity to have a short text corrected by the facilitator.

Qualification objectives

By the end of the workshop the participants will have

  • understood what is expected in a Natural Science English academic text
  • learnt how to review and possibly re-write academic texts
  • reflected on writing and publishing in English
  • discovered tools and tricks to improve their written English
  • grasped basic English punctuation rules
  • studied language aspects of papers from their specific scientific area
  • received feedback on their own text (if desired)

Trainer

Rosalind Bryan, Exeter University BA Modern languages, is a member of SETAR, EATAW and MELTA. Rosalind has been an intercultural trainer for over 25 years. Her experience includes training English Writing and Effective Presentation courses for Arthur Andersen, Writing Skills workshops for BP, Natural Science academic paper proofreading and extensive experience developing skills in the computer sciences sector.
